If you've ever been curious about Latin dancing but didn't know where to start, you're not alone. Most people have heard of Salsa, and maybe Bachata — but Kizomba? That one often gets a puzzled look. Here's a simple breakdown of all three so you can decide which one calls to you.
Salsa — The Classic Salsa is the one that started it all for most Latin dancers in India. It's energetic, fast, and full of spins. The music is upbeat and the footwork keeps you on your toes — literally. Salsa is danced in a slot (linear) or circular style and is perfect if you love high energy and showmanship. It's also one of the best dances to learn if you want to social dance at parties and events.
Bachata — The Romantic One Bachata has exploded in popularity over the last few years and for good reason. It's sensual, rhythmic, and easier to pick up than Salsa for most beginners. The music is slower and the connection between partners is closer. If you've seen videos of couples dancing smoothly with head rolls and body waves — that's Bachata. It originated in the Dominican Republic and has a beautiful, emotional quality to it.
Kizomba — The Hidden Gem Kizomba is the dance most people discover last — and then can't stop dancing. It originated in Angola and is deeply connected, slow, and meditative. There are no flashy spins or complex footwork. Instead, it's all about the lead and follow connection and moving as one with your partner. Many dancers say Kizomba changed how they understand music and movement altogether.
So which one should you start with? Honestly — try all three! At Latin Twist Mumbai, our weekly classes rotate between Salsa, Bachata and Kizomba so you get a taste of each. Most of our students find their favourite after just a few sessions.
